Curious About Reading?

Our curious firsties have been working diligently in reading through small group and whole group instruction.  How exciting it has been to see them grow as readers so far this year!!  In first grade we work hard to build our stamina as readers through listening to other readers.  We practice, practice, and practice the use of multiple strategies when we get stuck on a word.  Here are the strategies that we use:

If your student is still learning how to be a fluent reader, please focus on these strategies when you are reading with your child.

It is fun to read a story in different ways.  Here are some ideas:

1. You read the book to your student.
2. The student reads the book to you.
3. You read one page and your student reads another page.
4. You read a page and your student repeats what you read.

If your firstie is reading pretty fluently, please focus on asking them about the story.  You can ask them questions about the characters, setting, and details about the story.  They can try to make connections to other books that they have read.  It is even a great idea to ask them what their favorite part of the book was and why.  It can be very challenging for a first grader to support why they like something; therefore, this is a skill we really have to work on!

If you would like additional ideas for what to do before, during, or after reading, please check out our other website.  It has many other ideas and some resources that you may find helpful!

The best thing that we can all do is just read, read, read, read with our firsties!

Be a curious reader!
